Off late I am observing a blatant misuse of the term manifold in the AI for materials science field. Trying to draw attention to this sloppiness.

While GPs are heavily used in self-driving labs for materials science, someone starting in this field are bombarded with a bunch of unnecessary probability and kernel math. They’re just a giant boxes of functions we can draw from.

DIRECT Capstone UW, University of Washington, Chemical Engineering, 2021
I mentored a group of 5 students from the Materials Science and Engineering department for the DIRECT-CAPSTONE project at UW. I have made the following (hand written) notes for them to provide a prime on Riemannian geometry and PCA. I believe these are written to be as intuitive as possible and would be thrilled some of you find them useful as well.
Graduate level course, University of Washington, Chemical Engineering, 2023
I will be teaching a new course on Design of Experiments in the Department of Chemical Engineering in the winter quarter.
